Where local history, good food, art and a little retail therapy meet. The Ultimate Guide to Canal Street in New Smyrna Beach

There is something about Canal Street. Maybe it is the old Florida charm. Maybe it is the tree lined sidewalks, colorful storefronts and little shops you can wander into without really knowing what you are looking for. Or maybe it is the fact that you can spend an entire afternoon here with absolutely no plan and somehow end up having one of the best days of your vacation.

Whatever it is, Canal Street is one of those places that makes New Smyrna Beach feel like more than just a beach town. So when you are ready to trade your flip flops for a few hours of exploring, put Canal Street on the list.

Start With a Little History

Before we get to the shopping and food, let’s talk about what makes Canal Street so special.

Canal Street sits in the heart of historic downtown New Smyrna Beach, and its story goes way back. The area dates back to the founding of New Smyrna in 1768, and the canals that once served the community helped shape the street and its name. By the early 1900s, Canal Street had become the center of a thriving business district, and many of the historic buildings you see today date back to that era. Basically, you are not just walking around downtown, you are walking through a little piece of Old Florida. For history buffs, a deeper dive into the history of what makes New Smyrna Beach so unique comes at the New Smyrna Museum of History. This little hidden gem will teach you all about the coming to be of the historic area.

Come Hungry

We firmly believe that exploring requires snacks. Thankfully, Canal Street makes that very easy.

For something a little more special, stop at City Market Bistro. This cozy chef owned bistro and wine bar is tucked right into the historic district and makes a lovely stop for lunch, dinner or a glass of wine when you are ready to slow down for a bit. Looking for something with a little more date night energy? Bar Leona is a chic little spot serving Italian inspired dishes, house made pasta, small plates and a thoughtful wine selection. It is the kind of place that makes you want to order one more glass and stay awhile. Or if pizza is calling your name, Panheads Pizzeria is a local favorite with scratch made dough, creative pizzas and a fun classic rock theme. Because sometimes the perfect vacation dinner is a really good pizza and zero regrets.

Coffee First. Always.

If your ideal morning starts with coffee, Canal Street has you covered.

AJ Chocolate House is a fun downtown stop for coffee, chai, cold brew and tea in a relaxed café atmosphere. It is an especially easy addition to a morning of wandering around the shops.

Or if you are willing to venture just a little beyond Canal Street, Island Roasters Coffee Company is another local favorite worth knowing about. This family run coffee shop and roastery serves freshly roasted coffee along with breakfast and lunch options. Because it’s a simple fact that vacation coffee just tastes better!

Now for the Fun Part: Shopping

This is where you may want to give yourself a little extra time. Canal Street is full of locally owned boutiques, specialty shops, vintage finds, home décor and gifts that are considerably more interesting than anything you could pick up at a generic souvenir shop. Start with Wishbone Vintage if you love vintage clothing and one of a kind finds. The inventory is constantly changing, which means you never quite know what you are going to discover.

For something a little more polished, pop into Claiborne’s Closet for clothing, shoes and accessories. If you are shopping for a little something to bring home, The Posh Pineapple is exactly the kind of place where you walk in thinking you are just going to look and walk out carrying a bag. We have all been there. For home décor lovers, The Seaside Cottage is another fun stop with coastal inspired furnishings and gifts. Then there is The Galley, a specialty kitchen and gourmet shop where you can sample flavored olive oils and balsamic vinegars before choosing your favorites. A souvenir you can actually eat? Now we are talking.

Make Time for the Art

One of the things that makes Canal Street different from a typical beach town shopping district is its thriving arts scene. This is where you can slow down and actually look around. The Hub on Canal is a community art center and gallery featuring local artists, rotating exhibitions, studios, workshops and plenty of creative happenings. The surrounding Arts District is home to even more galleries and studios, including Arts on Douglas, Jane’s Art Center and The Artists’ Workshop. Canal Street’s monthly Gallery Walk brings these spaces together for an evening of art, exhibits and local creativity. So if you happen to be visiting on the first Saturday of the month, consider yourself lucky.

Check the Calendar Before You Go

This is one of our biggest Canal Street tips. Do not just check where you want to eat. Check what is happening. Canal Street hosts recurring events throughout the year, including Art & Artisan Strolls, Sip & Stroll, Gallery Walks and Classic Cars on Canal. There are also seasonal events and street festivals that bring even more local vendors, music, food and shopping into the district. The first Saturday of the month can be especially fun, with the Art & Artisan Stroll during the day, Sip & Stroll in the afternoon and Gallery Walk in the evening. That is basically an entire vacation itinerary hiding inside one Saturday. In the fall, keep an eye out for the Canal Street Scarecrow Contest and Canal Street Nights, which bring even more personality to the historic district.

Take a Little Walk

Here is our favorite way to experience Canal Street. Do not overplan it. Park the car, grab a coffee and start walking. Wander into the shops that catch your eye. Stop for lunch when you get hungry. Browse the galleries. Take a few pictures of the historic buildings. Find something you absolutely did not need but suddenly cannot live without. That is the magic of Canal Street. It is not about checking things off a list. It is about discovering something you did not expect to find.

Then Head Back to the Beach

Eventually, of course, you are going to have to go back to the beach. We know. Tragic. But that is one of the best things about staying in New Smyrna Beach. You can spend the morning with your toes in the sand, wander through historic downtown in the afternoon and still make it back in time to catch the sunset. Beach town life really does have its perks, and after a day of shopping, eating and exploring, there is nothing better than heading back to your vacation rental, kicking off your shoes and putting your feet up. Maybe unpack the bag you definitely did not plan on buying, or maybe open that bottle of wine, or just sit on the balcony and listen to the ocean. You are on vacation. There is no rush.

Your Canal Street Game Plan

If you only have a few hours, here is how we would do it. Start with coffee, walk Canal Street.

Browse the boutiques, pop into an art gallery, stop somewhere local for lunch, find a little something to bring home, grab a drink, and stay for sunset. If you happen to be visiting during one of Canal Street’s signature events? Even better, because the best New Smyrna Beach experiences are not always the ones you plan six months ahead. Sometimes they are the ones you stumble into while looking for coffee, and that might be our favorite thing about Canal Street. It feels local, welcoming and a little unexpected.
